I was a keen motorcyclist until a road accident in 2000 resulted in catastrophic right side orthopaedic injuries from shoulder to toe ultimately resulting in amputation of my right leg.

After the accident it took 20 operations spread over 3 years to get me going again. By the end of 2003 I was able to return to driving, but realized I was missing the performance thrills. So as an alternative, I tried a car track day.

To drive a car, the main adaptation I require as a result of my injuries is the fitment of a throttle pedal on the left of the car's footwell. I have enough movement in my right hand index finger to operate upshifts with wheel mounted gear change paddles. In my racing Golf, careful roll cage design means I'm able to lever myself in and out of the car fast enough to convince the MSA that should an incident occur, I'm no more of a liability to the race marshals than anyone else.

After a taste of track driving in a road car, I became interested enough to build an Alfa 156 Selespeed track machine. Through trial and error I learned something about circuit driving; the main thing being that I needed a faster car.

The move to a race prepared DSG equipped Golf GTI in 2005 increased the challenge, but then I realized I wanted the one thing that Track Days don't allow: competition.

In 2010 I made my racing debut in the VW Racing Cup. To follow my blog in closer detail follow this link: http://blog.fuchslubricants.com
